Luminous Sounds is a professional string ensemble comprised of 30 of New York's most sought-after string musicians.We specialize in performing today's most popular music using traditional string instruments and percussion.

What inspired you to start your business?

Having been a professional, freelance violist for years, performing for weddings and events became part of my regular income. That said, not all events are contracted well and in general, there is virtually zero communication between the ensemble who is performing on the day-of and the actual clients who are paying for them. Often, string ensembles are "sold" as an "add on" service by a DJ company or live band.Often the contractor or DJ will throw together a random group of musicians and tell them to show up at a specific time and place. Often the contractor/DJ would take the bulk of the money, leaving the musicians with next to nothing. These events were disorganized and the clients ultimately did not receive a product worth the money that they paid. In response to this very common practice, I formed a company that specialized in live string music using only the areas most qualified musicians. I communicate with every client (or planner) myself and then disseminate the information directly to the musicians. I wanted to create a business that focused on professionalism, organization, and strong communication while also providing fair wages to the musicians who are ultimately responsible for providing the soundtrack to our clients most important days.

What is something you would say to someone who is struggling in their first few years of business? Is there something you struggled with and learned from in those first few years?

Absolutely! In your first few years of business it is so important to get really clear about who your "ideal client" is and focus your attention towards attracting those people. Not everyone will want your product/service and that is 100% ok. You just need to figure out who does want/need your product or service and spend your time on those people. Don't get upset when someone inquires and doesn't book, they probably weren't your ideal client in the first place. This is something that I struggled with at the beginning, and once I learned who to focus my time and attention on, everything began to fall into place.


What hobbies, causes, or activities are you passionate about aside from your work?

I volunteer approximately 500 hours per year as an EMT at Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps.I am now attending Paramedic School to learn how to help people at a higher level. In addition to helping others medically, I am very passionate about helping animals, (rescues, adoptions, rehabilitation centers, etc.). Hobbies include attending live music shows, multi-course dinners, wine and creative cocktails.
